Debate in the City

My weekend turned out to be pretty great. After my spanish quiz on friday, I zipped over to the debate meeting spot and then proceeded to the train station that took us near enough NYU so that we could walk.

The tournament ended up starting about two hours late, and it continued to get slower and slower. So, it gave us some time to walk around Washington Square Park and get a snack before the tournament began. That being said, by the end of the day (which turned out to be literally around midnight) my partner Arushi and I had won two of our debates (we lost to a really good Rutgers team) and had some free, delicious pizza provided to us by the NYU debate team.

And, in the biggest surprise of my life, I ran into my senior year debate coach, James, at NYU. I know he was debating at a school in Los Angeles, but I never thought I would see him there! So I could to visit with him a bunch, which was really fun.

At the end of the tournament, my team and I went to our housing (which was kind of a pain because of the intense security) and then proceeded to dine on milkshakes at a diner.

The weirdest part of the whole tournament was definitely when the person whose room we were staying in came back at about 3am and had no idea who we were or that we were supposed to be sleeping in her room. I slept through this whole ordeal, but my partner I guess explained it pretty well to her.

The next day we got up early and went to debate, we won 1 round and lost another that day, but we lost to a really good Yale team that ended up going to finals, so I can't complain too much.

Since none of our teams were going on to the next round (only 12 out of 100 teams did...) we got to leave early, and hopped on the train back to Poughkeepsie.

I didn't take many pics this weekend because the debate pres. took all the group photos, so I'll post those sometime this week!

  1. It sounds like a wonderful week end. It is strange to meet some one you know so far away from home. I haven't had breakfast and the milkshake sounds yummy!

  3. You lead such a glamorous life, Meg! I remember being thrilled to have breakfast at the Three Bears Cafe in Bozeman. Debating in New York City would have been beyond my wildest dreams. Enjoy it all.
