Boston Trip

My debate team and I were joking about how Boston's new motto should be; Boston: Where bad things happen to good people, because, for a while it seemed that's how the trip was going...
Friday started off badly with our road trip from hell where we got lost in rural conneticut and then got a flat tire and had to wait at the side of a highway for an hour. It was also almost impossible to find parking in Boston near Northeastern University. Because of these three factors we ended up missing the first round of debate. We then went to our second round of debate and our judge never showed up...so both teams just got a "win" for that round.

The tournament had a fun concept though, it required that all teams had to have a varsity member and a novice member, so I debated with the vice president who happens to be an excellent debater. So for our first real debate round, we went up against this fairly good MIT team and beat them on their case of abolishing the UN security council veto power. Our fourth round we went up against an even better MIT team and we beat them. Our fifth round was a "bubble" round which means, whoever wins moves on to finals and whoever loses...doesn't. Unfortunately, we went up against a really good Yale team who had this very specific case that we didn't know that much about, so while it was a close round, we ended up not advancing to finals.

Besides the fun debate rounds, the most fun was definitely walking around Boston. We had some time late friday night (where most things in Boston were unfortunately closed) as well as mid-day saturday to explore the city, mostly looking for food.

Our trip back was uneventful (thank goodness) and we made it back to Vassar early enough not to miss saturday night festivities including a concert and a dance.

  1. In spite of flat tire, no parking and other not so pleasant events, it sounds like you made the best of a bad situation. Looking for food is always fun. Congratulations on your wins!!

  2. We missed you at Birchwood today! Your mom and Will, Cassie, Kurt, Keith, Konrad, Suzan and our crew ate Tyler's Ultimate Turkey Sloppy Joes (which are much better than they sound or look). It started snowing beautiful huge snowflakes right before we left.
